Hybridization

Hybridizing goals

  • Forms: A focus on form of Waterlily, other forms will only be kept if they are really exceptional
  • Colors: Bring out the unique range of colors in dahlias and avoid reverting back to yellow and dominating colors. My palette is inspired by paint pigments, rich saturated tones of red, pink, and plum, earthy tones of gold, ochre, burnt sienna and burnt umber. I also prefer a smoky effect as the blooms mature and will try to include that.
  • Virus and disease tolerant: Heirloom varieties (40 year old and older) are known for their resilience. Thus, selected heirloom waterlilies will be crossed with newer ones in order to increase resistance to external factors. Only the healthiest and most vigorous seedlings will go to the next stage.
  • Stability: Each seedling will undergo a growing process of 3-4 years to stabilize their genes, with a strict evaluation at the end of the season
  • Other desirable trades: prolific, closed center during the hot months, good tuber production, strong stems, 45 degree bloom angle

I’m a member of the Tennessee Dahlia society and in a training process to become an ADS Judge Candidate to better understand and select my seedlings.

2024 Seedlings

2024 was my first year growing from seeds and all of the seedlings were anemone type dahlias. The parents are from Floret’s Cancan Girls. Waterlily seeds are usually not available for purchases so I used these to practice instead
